Andrew Miller

Biography

My formal training was in illustration at the Eastbourne College of Art.

I live in South Devon and am inspired by the beautiful coastal scenery of the south west as well as the moor land landscapes of Dartmoor. I prefer working out of doors so as to be able to capture the essence of the scenery and to inspire a vigorous response to the changing moods of the elements. The conditions of mood and light vary dramatically from day to day, offering a constant source of fascination and new challenges to respond to.

As well as creating finished work out of doors, my sketchbook is always with me to enable me to develop ideas for subsequent work in the studio.

Earlier in 2011 I was appointed official War Artist for the Royal Marines, as a result of which I worked in Afghanistan for five weeks. During this time I produced detailed sketch books to record the operations of the marines in Camp Bastion, Task Force Headquarters in Lashkagar and out in the forward operational bases and checkpoints. You can view some of the paintings from this tour in the portfolio pages of my web site.
